Comments like this show the clear ignorance of the general public. This is not a "Nation" with a "National" government, nor is it a "Democracy"; rather, this is a Union of "sovereign" States and the President of the UNION is not, nor was ever intended to be, the President of the People; for, each State has it own president that is the president of the People -- i.e. each being President of the citizens of their respective State. In fact, the People do NOT even have a constitutional right to vote for president of the Union, which is, instead, at the discretion of the States, individually, that they, at their option, may "allow" their citizens the "privilege" to vote for the President of THEIR Union -- i.e. a Union that belongs to the STATES, instituted for THEIR general welfare, THIER commercial interests and THEIR defense. The Union was NOT instituted for the general welfare, commercial interests or common defense of the People! If you are alert, the framers of our Constitution are the ones that actually invented "trickle-down-economics"; for, it was the States that were to be guarded and protected by UNION (not the People) so as to provide an environment with the purpose to encourage and facilitate the freedom, commercialism and the individual interests of the States to prosper; in turn, the People would prosper -- as long as the States were not stifled by overburdening oppressive (unconstitutional) regulations, excessive (unconstitutional) unjust taxes and the (unconstitutional) thievery of each other's wealth and property. In fact, the Framers engineered the Constitution, with countless checks and balances (today all but destroyed by a lawless government and a corrupted and lawless people), so as to guard against the evil excesses of democracy under which the U.S. was burdened (those are the framer's words, not mine). This is one evil they did not want to re-surface and "rear its ugly head" again -- an evil that was destroying the States and their interests on multiple fronts. They also, point blank said, that a popular vote of the President of the United States would be disastrous to the States and would put the States -- those that were to be "protected" by UNION -- at risk of being dissolved altogether; for, the TRUE "members" of the Union are the States; and, it is the States that are meant to be protected by UNION and NOT the People -- with the welfare of the People, as is the responsibility of any other sovereign State anywhere else in the world, being the responsibility of their respective individual States and NOT the Federal government! The United States is NOT a State, does NOT, nor was ever intended to have, the whole power of legislation over the States and has only "limited" and "qualified" sovereignty, with all remaining sovereignty, not constitutionally given up by the States, belonging with the States to be exercised, individually (not collectively) at THEIR pleasure! It makes no sense to get rid of the Electoral College, since the President has NO authority or business to interfere or involve itself in the internal jurisdictions and affairs of any of the "sovereign" member States that are meant to be protected and not destroyed by that individual (President)meant to be its guardian; for, to have a popular election of the President would be contrary and repugnant to the purpose of UNION.
